Faux Fur Parka

During the Glowology family Summer holiday to Greece, Stressed Husband and I were amazed at the shop selling furs in our hotel. Yes, fur! Not bikinis – or even mankinis – but hot, cosy fur! And it was at least 90c degrees. There were floor sweeping coats, short jackets, swingy capes, impossible-not-to-stroke gilets, hats and bags, all in a remarkable array of hues. I think it was real fur, so because of that, along with the fact there were no fur bikinis – imagine! – I didn’t feel inclined to make a purchase. I did however, realise there is no texture more glamorous than those silky strands of fur and that whoever you are, and no matter what shape, size or age, a woman has to have at least a little bit of it in her wardrobe…

lovely bath scrub

Being a self confessed beauty junkie, I usually know when there’s a buzz in the air – a new product or service which is causing a stir among the beauty bloggers and writers out there. So, when I’d come across more than a few rave reviews about natural beauty company St Grape, I knew I had to find out more. As luck would have it, ‘cosmetic Karma’ had already set to work and the lovely people at St Grape actually contacted me first! I was delighted when they asked if I would like to give 5 lucky readers the chance to win a pot of their best-selling, super-smelling Aqua Bliss Bath Scrub. Once I’d tried the product and understood what the fuss was about, I knew I couldn’t refuse such an offer…

Benefit Brow Zings

Well, there are brows – your every day, neither here nor there, unremarkable strips of hair above your eyes kind of affairs – then there are BROWS – face framing, eye catching, make you look fabulous, ought to have their own Twitter account kind of brows. Unless you’re Cara Delevingne, Brooke Shields or from the ‘blessed of brow’ gang, your brows probably fall into the first category. Mine did too, until I came across my lovely little beauty must have…Benefit Brow Zings.

Although Glowology brings you the latest and greatest news and tips on how to look and feel good in the skin that you’re in, I’m also a big believer in shouting out about those little – or big – things in life that help brighten our day and put a skip in our step. And what better day to bring these nuggets of joy than on a Wednesday! It’s mid week limbo day – even researchers have found it’s Wednesdays rather than Monday’s that leave as feeling a little blah…

Ponytail

If you were on Family Fortunes and they asked you to name a popular hairstyle, I bet the answer Ponytail would get you the highest score. It’s a style that’s been around for years and when done properly, can make your 2 minutes of effort look amazing. But beware the versions that give ponytails a bad name such as the much giggled at Croydon Facelift, where it’s scraped up and back so tightly, your eyes and forehead wind up heading north giving you a ‘stuck in a wind tunnel or battered with Botox’ look, or the bland ‘I couldn’t be bothered, I’m off to Lidl’ look, which is a greasy, loosely tied at the nape of the neck with zilch effort affair. The perfect ponytail can pack a punch with just a few minutes of coiffing. Here’s how…

I came across this little complexion flatterer in my September Glossybox and will be forever grateful. You know that to get a place in my Friday’s Fabulous Beauty Flash post, a product has to be pretty darn special, so it goes without saying that my days aren’t the same if my Mememe Cherub’s Blush Cheek and Lip Tint goes in one of my daughters’ makeup bags astray.

I was immediately drawn to the ethereal name and so was really pleased when the results lived up to it. The tint has a watery consistency which I thought would be a bit drying, but although it sinks in quickly, it isn’t drying at all. Using the slim brush, I sweep a couple of lines across the apple of my cheeks before blending up to my hair line and it leaves my complexion looking as if I’ve had a good, long walk in the fresh London air (cough cough).  Being a balm and gloss junkie, I apply the tint to my lips after a clear balm, otherwise it looks quite matte – which is great for some, but as you know, I prefer a little sheen.

The colour looks quite dark and vampy in the bottle, more suitable to a dramatic evening look, but actually, the tint is more like the subtle pinky purple juice of a bitten blueberry – for want of a poetic description! And the price tag? A cheeky little £5.50.

Thinking about dieting in the winter never quite feels right with the weather getting colder, the days getting darker and the call of the carbs upon you. In fact, I can almost hear a collective inner cheer from women around the country as they dig out those forgiving big, cosy jumpers. But, instead of focusing on losing weight, why not think about what we should be adding to our diet to benefit our looks and keep us full of vitality whatever the season. Expert Osteopath and Naturopath, Nadia Alibhai, shares her favourite beautifying foods…

Do you remember your first foray into the world of cosmetics? I do. I was about 10 when I discovered roller-ball lip-glosses which I would excitedly apply in the loo between school lessons and then stare in the mirror, mesmerised by the way they made my lips look prettier, plumper and just a little more ‘Charlie’s Angel’. Never mind that the flavour and smell of the glosses – cherry, tangerine and peppermint – were overpoweringly sickly or that the gloop factor meant constantly detaching permed strands of hair from my lips. I was smitten from that first slick.

Since the prestigious paint company, Farrow & Ball, showcased its ubiquitous, go-with-everything paint shade Elephant’s Breath, grey has taken over as the new go-to in the world of fashion and interiors. It’s also been the shade for nails to be seen in and the trend – as seen on the Autumn 2013 catwalk – is still going stronger than ever. Why the longevity? Well, it works so well with whatever colour you wear and there’s a nuance to flatter any skin tone. So next time you’re looking for a polish that will look good in any season, Forego the wishy-washy beige and barely-there pink and go for grit with grey – the new nail neutral.
