Follow the Beauty Guru

Do you remember your first foray into the world of cosmetics? I do. I was about 10 when I discovered roller-ball lip-glosses which I would excitedly apply in the loo between school lessons and then stare in the mirror, mesmerised by the way they made my lips look prettier, plumper and just a little more ‘Charlie’s Angel’. Never mind that the flavour and smell of the glosses – cherry, tangerine and peppermint – were overpoweringly sickly or that the gloop factor meant constantly detaching permed strands of hair from my lips. I was smitten from that first slick.

Fast forward 30 years and I witness the same frisson of excitement from my 13 year old as she brings home yet another Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm. I find it fascinating that, whereas I learned my haphazard makeup techniques from the pages of Jackie and My Guy magazines (and Cosmo if I could sneak it past my mum), my teen follows the step by step make up tutorials on YouTube made by 16 year old ‘beauty gurus’. So much more sophisticated than in my day! So, I’ve taken a techno leaf out of my little beauty lover’s netbook and found myself a beauty expert par excellence…

In today’s reality TV obsessed culture, being told somebody is a ‘celebrity makeup artist’ might mean they’ve blended in the orange streaks on a Big Brother contestant. But, the title takes on a whole new meaning in makeup artist Lisa Eldridge’s case; she’s perfected the maquillage of uber A listers, such as Miss Moss, Cate Blanchett, Anna Friel and Kate Winslet to name a few and has worked her magic for countless magazine covers, fashion shows and movies. In other words – she is the Makeup Guru’s Guru. You might remember her as the expert on Channel 4’s Ten Years Younger, who was able to reduce women to tears of disbelief as she showed them how a little concealer and blush could dramatically transform their looks.

I’ve watched Lisa’s videos open mouthed as she’s shown how to erase dark under eye circles or how to do a quick, face brightening look that’ll fade away the years. Her foundation tips videos are priceless too and the fact that she’s had over 50 million views is testament to her brilliance! What I love most though, is that Lisa is a down to earth and warm presenter and it’s great that she’s able to show the complete beginner where to start, using products from budget to premium price ranges. Go on, watch her in action here….

But before you get hooked – like me – on these expertly delivered videos, you’d better show the kids how to whip up a quick pasta for tea…you might be otherwise engaged for quite a while!

It’s so funny you’ve written about Lisa because she is probably one of my favourite make up artists and I too swear by her videos and her lovely, down to earth, relaxed manner.

Looking forward to reading more on ‘Glowology’! (Wonderful name btw)
