Oh, I do love a bit of sunshine – certainly missing it at the moment! – so thank you wonderful Sharon from Best Before End Date for sending a touch of the yellow rays my way with my Sunshine Blogger Award. This is a great way of paying it forward – so we can support bloggers we love and get more eyes on the written word. We are sharing our favourites and keeping the blogging vibe A.L.I.V.E!
It seems to me that there is a lot of samey-samey going on out there on the grids of Instagram. Don’t get me wrong – I like to lose myself in a good ol’ scroll like the best of them – but many of us feel there is more to life than perfectly curated squares and OOTD (outfit of the day, mum) that may help gain us lots of followers, but don’t always fill you up (content wise). I’m not knocking style Instagrammers or those that are fabulously talented at getting perfect, beautiful pictures – there is room for us all – and I love that lots of those wonderful women making businesses from their particular talents on Instagram. I just think there are those of us who still prefer blogging (writing) and to read a well turned out blog – spelling/grammar mishaps and all even – as long as the content is interesting. I love writing and I love reading, so if a blog post grabs me, there’s nothing I like better than to nod along with my blogging mates and let them know!
THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS SHARON ASKED ME…
1. Why did you start blogging?
From the age of 20, my career had been writing for women’s magazines and after a loooong break as a stay at home mum and dabbling with other career ideas (too many to mention) a friend told me I should try blogging. I knew a bit about it and regularly read Britmums and other mummy bloggers but, I felt I’d now past that mummy stage of discussing nappies etc now that my kids were teens. I was in my 40s and felt we should be discussing the trials and tribulations of getting older – but make it fun and lively. Positive ageing!
2. Have you ever considered giving it up?
Oh, almost daily! For some reason, though I keep plodding along. As someone that has so many ideas and starts things, very rarely finishing them, keeping my blog going for over 4 years is somewhat of a triumph for me. When I get recognised it’s very strange (true story – I’ve been recognised as ‘Lisa from Glowology’ a few times in the local park and once in a cocktail bar – of course!) When people tell me that they enjoy my writing, it means a lot – and that’s why it can be pretty disheartening when those that tell you they love your blog, never actually bother liking the posts you write when you share them on Instagram or Facebook (especially when you know they’ve read it.) So it does get me wondering whether people are really interested in anything I have to say or whether they’re just being polite. But those little niggles aside, as I get older I am feeling more and more passionate about sharing positivity and ways and means of living life to the full and feeling and looking fabulous as we age – being alive and healthy, surrounded by people I love means more to me every day and I want to share that happiness.
3. Have you met any blogger friends IRL or who would you like to meet?
I have some fabulous blogger friends, even though we have met just a few times! Laurie from Vanity and Me is one – she’s the most glamorous and stylish 55 year old I know and on first impressions you might think she could be a bit haughty (it’s the ultra cool vibes she emits that make you feel scruffy no matter how much you’ve tried!) How wrong that impression is though! As well as being one of the most glam, she’s also so down to earth and friendly. Alex from I Heart Beauty is also one of the first bloggers I met in real life and we’ve shared a few gossipy coffee dates together. I’d love to see more of these gorgeous ladies!
A couple of years back I was pleased to be shortlisted for the now defunct Thirty Plus Blogger Awards and finally got to meet a few of my favourite bloggers at the awards – Nikki from Midlife Chic – a super smart woman – in style and intelligence! She is lovely. Sharon from Back To You Beauty who I would say is one of the most dedicated beauty bloggers I’ve ever known – she is working it, girlfriend! I love her passion – and her Insta stories! And I met one of my heroes from the start of my blogging experience – the uber-blogger Vicki aka Honest Mum. I am so delighted to see her go from strength to strength with her best-selling book, Mumboss and heading some brilliant empowering campaigns. During my blogging years, Vicki has never been too busy to stop and chat when I’ve seen her – or to leave a lovely comment on a post if she’s read it.
Who would I like to meet IRL from the blogsphere? Sharon from Best Before End Date naturally! Kerry from Kerry Life and Loves – a trooper, Essex mum and brilliant writer, she’s so friendly and supportive online and I’d love to have a cocktail with these two ladies but I reckon it could get messy!
Another really smart woman I have almost daily Instagram banter with the super inspiring Tracey from Face Up Fitness and Face Up Beauty. Check out her inspiring Instagram and see how strong and fit she is at 52 – wow! I hope we will meet up one day soon for a real chat (maybe at the gym so she can show me up!) I get tired out just watching her Insta stories. Tracey doesn’t blog now but she is prevalent on Instagram and keeps it real – she loves her food as much as the gym and that makes me happy!
4. What’s your proudest achievement?
To do with the blog? My proudest achievement is that my post about my surprise vow renewal on my 50th – click here to read – caught the eye of journalists on Prima Magazine and so they invited me along for a makeover and interviewed me for the story of how me and Stressed Husband met while travelling and to talk about our second honeymoon. The fact that I’ve been asked to work with some great brands like Boden and Imedeen and have been commissioned by magazines such as Prima and Sunday Times Style means I must be doing something right! Writing and editing the 98 page showguide for This Morning Live last year and meeting all the presenters was wonderful as well!
5. Do you have specific goals you’d like to achieve?
YES! I would like to get my act together and blog more consistently, using my blog as a ‘Shop Window’ – to showcase my writing to relevant brands and titles who might want to work with me. So far, it has helped bring me some really interesting content writing and PR work for various clients in the wellness and beauty industry. Apart from writing it to enhance my working life, first and foremost I want my blog to appeal to women like me at 50 plus going through the ups and downs of life. I want it to reflect my passion for positive ageing, ‘keeping it real’ in terms of my advice, with posts being accessible and achievable at bringing a glow of happiness, beauty and wellness into our lives as we get older. Now, the biggest goal I have is to finally finish the book that I’m writing!
