Another Year Older

Happy_birthday_me

Happy birthday to me! I mentioned in a recent post that I wasn’t feeling as excited about my birthday as I usually am (read about it here) but I’m pleased to report that things have changed. My birthday is tomorrow and I am now THIS (I’m holding my arms out really, really, really wide) excited! πŸ™‚ So, what’s changed?

Well, apart from the joy of having all three of my offspring with me at some point tomorrow and them having to do as I say because – did you know – it’s Β my birthday, I have had time to reflect on what getting older means to me, and I’m now feeling pretty positive.Β

I read a feature recently about how, on entering her 40s, gorgeous Sharon Stone took a bottle of wine with her into the loo, stared at her ageing face and body (er, she calls THAT face and body ageing!) and cried and cried. Then, she drank the wine and pulled herself together and said something along the lines of ‘okay, you’re getting old. You either deal with it and go with the flow or you live the rest of your life a miserable wreck because honey, there ain’t no going back!’ (She didn’t actually say the last bit, that’s what the little voice in my head is saying to me right now). And so, Sharon manned-up and went with the flow. Her scare with a brain haemorrhage made her realise even more so how important it is to celebrate the privilege of being alive and getting older because it’s waaaaaay better than the alternative.

So, I’ve decided that turning 49 tomorrow means I’m going to do a ‘Sharon’. But, seeing as it’s my birthday, I’m not going to take wine with me into the bathroom, I’m going to take a bottle of Prosecco out into the garden. And instead of crying at my ageing face and body, I’m going to laugh (yes, those bingo wings are quite comical) and celebrate with myself, the joys of getting older. And I know there will be many joys.

Happy Birthday to ME!

    • Hi Bilyana, thank you for your kind comment and birthday wishes! Yes, I was a member at the Park Club many, many moons ago. Are you still a member there? x

  6. Looking good at 49! Am 6 months from 50 and hating it but love that my son (17) and daughter (13) tell me I am beautiful every day…makes having kids worthwhile! Hope you celebrated in style. xxx ps

    • Hi Jo, thank you for commenting – so glad I found your blog, it really resonates with me and my teen! My other ‘kids’ are 22 and 20, but I still think of them as teens rather than young adults πŸ™‚ So age wise, I’m not far behind you am I? Fast approaching 50 (kicking and screaming, hahah). Your kids sounds lovely saying you’re beautiful – the nice side of having teens, ay? Have a lovely summer! xx
