Here I am on week two of my 6 Week Body & Mind Makeover Challenge which I started last week. I have a few people keeping tabs on me and reminding me that because I’ve put it out there that I’m making some fitness/nutritional changes and setting myself new goals, I have to actually do it! Now, seeing as a lot of the time I’m all trackies and no trainers, that is the difficult part for me BUT I promised you updates and so updates you will get – and I also promise that they will be absolutely truthful and contain my health and fitness sins as well as my triumphs – if there are any 😉 So, here goes…
A friend, let’s call her Toni, was telling me about somebody she knew who had been trying for years to shape-up and lose weight and then, after years of talking about it, she finally succeeded. Apparently this woman always looked lovely but she said that she’d put on a lot of weight going through the menopause and wanted to drop the excess pounds that she felt were making her feel sluggish and not as energetic as she wanted to be. Looking at her now super slim friend in awe, Toni asked her, “How did you do it?” Then, sat back, excitedly waiting for the secret to slimness to be spilt…”I ate less than I normally do and I started going to the gym 3 times a week,” replied Toni’s friend. “Yeah…and what else?” Toni asked. Well, there wasn’t anything else. The End…
A few months ago, I was walking down Chiswick High Road feeling a bit fed up with myself. My workload was pretty heavy and I hadn’t made time to get to any exercise classes. Lack of workouts tend to send me into a downward spiral when it comes to my mood and what I eat. In fact, my diet has been pure pants…No, no, no…I haven’t been surviving on a strict diet of Y-fronts and boxers but ‘pants’ as in ‘rubbish’ i.e., pizza, crisps, chocolate, bread, and more chocolate. Really, there has been no holds barred when it comes to carbs and sugar.
As a child, I used to look up to my mum as if she was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen – I still do! The waft of her Rive Gauche fragrance as she glammed up at her dressing table, ready to go out on the town with dad, the perfect roast dinners she made on a Sunday and her health and beauty rituals such as massaging in a face-full of cold cream before sleeping and the sharing out of spoonfuls of Cod Liver Oil with the family.
As I gazed in awe at a photo of Yasmin Le Bon in a recent newspaper article, two questions went through my head: 1. What must it feel like to be able to walk down the street and have people swoon at your supermodel beauty – when you’re over 50?! and 2. Where can I get my hands on those Lumity Life supplements she’s harking on about for giving her back her vitality and bloom since hitting the menopause? Unfortunately, I will never know the answer to question number 1. But – hoorah! – question number 2 was sorted…I found out where to get that Lumity Life stuff!

I’m normally pretty rubbish at remembering to take any supplements but these little capsules came in such pretty packing (oh, I know! I’m such a soft touch) that I was quite happy to leave them out by the kitchen sink so that I remember to take them…well, I’m forever filling up the kettle for my copious amount of
coffee green tea. But who needs green tea when you have antioxidant boosting ingredients like this?..

And how was I feeling? Well, I’ve known for some time that my dizzy spells, raging PMT, forgetfulness, middle-age spread, lethargy (I could go on and on) must have something to do with my age. I’ve felt that my hormones have been wreaking havoc and making physical and emotional changes that I don’t like very much, so I was definitely more than ready to give these a go.
Obviously, Lumity is not designed specifically for women who are experiencing menopausal symptoms, they’re ideal for all of us busy women, but the specially blended cocktail of nature’s goodies, are certainly designed to address them.
I took the capsules religiously every day, twice a day for a month before I started feeling that something was happening. The first thing I noticed was lack of crabiness around my period! The time of the month came and went with hardly a flicker of the highly charged emotions I’d began to experience over the last year or so. I was impressed and put it down to ‘beginners luck’ but again, the second month and the third and onto my fourth – a much calmer, more balanced and even tempered me has re-emerged. And I like it. And my poor suffering family LOVE it! 😉
My sleep has improved, in that I fall asleep quicker and if I wake up in the early hours, I can thankfully go straight back to a deep slumber without annoying Stressed Husband by huffing and puffing until the alarm goes off! But although I’m sleeping better, I am sadly no more inclined to jump out of bed with renewed energy – the snooze button is still getting more action than it should do. Well, Lumity gets some great feedback but it has never claimed to dish out miracles!
The biggest change in my appearance is my hair. In fact, on my the last visit to the salon, my hairdresser asked me what I had been doing to it as it had got so much thicker! I’d thought so myself but when she mentioned it without me even telling her that I’d been taking Lumity, I knew it wasn’t just a figment of my imagination. Before taking Lumity, I had been a bit downhearted about my hair getting thinner and had put it down to ageing and a fact of life, but it has really improved and so I’m delighted.
Overall, I am impressed. There’s no doubt I’ve seen and felt some positive changes that can’t possibly be just a placebo effect and I’m quite happy to fork out for a monthly supply of these as, when you think about it, at £79 a month (which is the automatically replenish price) it’s not much more than I spend on buying a large coffee each day. And it’s a small price to pay for getting rid of that monthly monster that had tendencies to terrorise the family!

Way back in February I wrote a post about how to make yourself feel good when you’re feeling a bit down (click here) and I often write about how the dark, cold days of winter leave me feeling blah as well (click here). You have every right to think I’m a bit of a moany madam, but it’s really just the winter that does it to me…oh and living in a perpetual building site!
But I wanted to let you know about my favourite feel good find – and I’m so pleased it’s come my way just as the days are getting shorter – and wetter! It’s a handy little Vitamin D3 spray from Natural Health Practice that was sent to me, along with the staggering results of research by the Scientific Advisory Committee, that found a huge 60% of the UK population are deficient in Vitamin D!
So, why do we need Vitamin D? Apart from boosting your mood, Vitamin D helps the body to absorb phosphorous and calcium, which are essential to bone growth and inadequate levels of it can lead to insufficient bone density, fatigue, and muscle aches.
Most dermatologists will tell you to wear sunscreen daily – so this, plus the fact that we have low levels of sunlight in the winter can lead to lack of Vitamin D, BUT that doesn’t mean you should throw away the sunscreen – No Siree – your wrinkles won’t thank you for that! But getting outside for 10 minutes without sunscreen is all you need. In just a few minutes, your skin is unlikely to suffer and you’ll be filling up your Vitamin D quota.
Don’t forget to eat the right foods as well – eggs, mushrooms, fatty fish, meat and fortified cereals all help, but if you’re suffering with the winter blues, fatigue and general lethargy more than usual, it’s a good idea to ask your GP for a blood test.
