6 Reasons to Jump for Joy in January

There’s a lot of doom mongering surrounding January and, to be honest, I’ve never been a fan. We don’t need researchers to tell us it’s the most depressing month of the year, the time we’re most likely to succumb to the big, black dog of the doldrums. This year though, I’m getting tough and I plan to face January head on: So what that we’ve had a ‘little’ rain and the days are short and dark? And so what that the pounds I’ve piled on so quickly over Christmas will take so much longer to shed? And so what that my car got clamped on January 1st and I had to pay £100 to get it released? I’m inviting you to join me in not letting January stand in the way of making us feel good. There are reasons to keep smiling – and it’ll be over before you know it!

1. There are bound to be Christmas left overs such as chocolates, cheese or other delectable treats that need finishing off. Don’t feel guilty – the more you look at them in the cupboards, the more they will taunt you. So, eat them. Get it over and done with and enjoy it! You can focus on getting fit and slim afterwards.

2. Get out those TV series box sets and hunker down under the duvet for a mammoth TV fest after work or at weekends. It’s almost the law that you do this in January so make the most of it and get hubby or the kids to join you and revel in your snuggle time!

3. Tights and trousers are in, regular waxes and expensive trips to the beauty salon are out! I’m not condoning you give up making yourself look fabulous altogether (lipstick is compulsory whatever the season), but a little hairy leg laziness is fine for a few months!

4. There is a strong possibility of snow days which means you can enjoy sliding down hills with the kids and burning up calories, thus making yourself feel fit and fun or make the most of Number 2 and continue the TV fest secure in the knowledge that everyone else is doing the same, so, again, don’t feel guilty! And if you do manage to brave the elements to get in to work, it will be much more peaceful and quiet than usual, giving you time to plan your summer holiday.

5. New beginnings are the theme in January. Make this the January you plan to make your dreams a reality. Take a small step every day to realising your hopes and ambitions and write down your achievements no matter how big or small. You’re on your way.

6. If you are feeling particularly gloomy and can’t shake out of it, wallow in it! Take a duvet day (or hour, or weekend) and just be. We don’t always have to be on top of everything (housework, filing, kids agenda etc, Twitter etc…) life will not fall apart and you’re not a bad person! Take time to Just Be and you’ll see that it’s often when you still your mind that new thoughts, dreams and ideas come flooding in.

Go do one January…we’re not afraid of you!
