My Review of The Peel Boutique by Dr Rabia Malik

There’s definitely a time and place for long, relaxing treatments that encompass beauty and wellbeing, or for those slightly invasive techniques that delve a bit deeper into your skin concerns and may leave you with a day or two of downtime. And that’s all well and good, but with Christmas around the corner and not enough hours in the day, I want no-fuss, get-me-looking-good-right-now kind of help.

Last year, one of my favourite treatments was the Super Speedy Light Facial – an LED facial which worked wonders on my mood and skin – really plumping it up and giving me the kind of rosy flush I get from a long, invigorating dog walk. It’s a perfect way to cheer yourself up on these dark days too. So, when I was commissioned by The Sunday Times Style Magazine to write about facial peels, I knew just where I would be heading to…The Peel Boutique by Dr Rabia Malik. I’d had a skin treatment with Dr Rabia before and loved the results – she’s well known within beauty circles for her results driven, holistic approach to skin health and her peels are legendary (TV Presenter, Trinny Woodall is a regular client and big fan) and I couldn’t wait to find out more…

Inspired by the express beauty culture Dr Rabia experienced on a recent trip to the States, she decided to launch the UK’s first doctor-developed peel bar offering medical-grade, non-toxic peels to enhance skin health in just 20 minutes.

The main blighters afflicting the landscape of my skin are sun induced pigmentation patches and a menopausal dullness that no amount of super beam highlighting makeup can seem to liven up. Dr Rabia recommended that out of the three peels on the treatment menu, Brightening Peel for normal or combination skin, would be the perfect solution for me. However, as it was Friday, and after the week I’d had, which included among many things – deadlines, a sick-dog and teen tantrums – I was looking forward to an after work, restorative prosecco and didn’t want the possibility of red, scaly skin forcing me into hiding. Thankfully, Dr Rabia reassured me that The Peel Boutique’s hero ingredient is Lactic Acid – a much gentler option than Glycolic Acid which is present in harsher peels. So basically, I could expect excellent exfoliation and skin resurfacing without downtime. Yes!

WHAT DID IT FEEL LIKE? I sat at the ‘workstation’ in front of a mirror while Dr Rabia used cotton pads to remove my makeup, allowing a clean surface for the peel to act upon. The Brightening mixture contained a peel base of pomegranate, papaya, pumpkin and pineapple enzyme combined with lactic acid – the most popular of the Alpha Hydroxy Acids. As Dr Rabia brushed the peel onto my face I felt a warm and pleasant tingling and tightening of my skin accompanied by a delicious wintery aroma – pumpkin!

While the peel was zinging into action, Dr Rabia used two gently vibrating hand held devices on my face explaining that they emitted sonic pulses to activate enzymes in the peel and enhance penetration of the peel’s active ingredients. When 6 minutes was up, the peel was removed and a calming, moisturising serum was applied followed by SPF – crucial after a peel as the new, fresh skin is vulnerable to irritation from sunlight, even on cloudy days.

DID IT WORK? About an hour later, the initial shade of ‘after-workout’ pinkness subsided and my skin looked reawakened – as if I’d had a good night’s sleep and a more refined and even texture made pores look smaller too. I even went makeup-free for that Friday night prosecco and didn’t scare anybody!

THE VERDICT: I was really impressed that my fatigued face was transformed in just 20 minutes! I think that if you’re not sure about skin peels or the more medical grade treatments available, then an express peel is an ideal introduction and it’s definitely a great pre-party skin booster. Even though I didn’t wear makeup immediately after, I found that for a few days after the peel, makeup went on much more smoothly.

I have been dithering over whether to have a peel for so long but everyone who I know that has had one has turned out with a really scaly patchy dry face which has put me off. I also have dry and freckled skin so this gentler option maybe the solution! I am going to treatment myself! If my skin looks as glowing as yours I will be happy. The only agony will be the journey home! xx

Hi Jo. Thank you for leaving a comment 🙂 I wonder what type of peels your friends have had that left them so flaky? I know there are much stronger ones than those offered by Dr Rabia at The Peel Bar, so guess it would be one of those? My skin had a little bit of flaking a couple of days after but nothing major and it could just be rubbed away gently with a wet cloth before moisturising. I definitely had a glow going on for a while afterward though! let me know if you do go along and don’t forget to use the GLOWOLOGY discount code! Lisa xx

Great write up but I’ve been going to a facial bar for ages already around the corner from my office in the city so not sure about this being the UKs first. ASKINOLOGY does advanced peels and is run by a doctor too (Dr Askari does my Botox in the clinic downstairs which is part of the same business). Just saying…

Hi Giselle. Thank you so much for your comment and for informing me about ASKINOLOGY – they sound great. I just checked their website and they have a really great and comprehensive list of treatments – including peels. I wasn’t aware of the ASKINOLOGY but I am a fan of Dr Rabia and her treatments as I always get great results with her, so that’s why I wanted to review her new venture – The Peel Boutique. Perhaps I should’ve said ‘one of the first’ instead of The First – thanks for drawing my attention to that and to ASKINGOLOGY – hopefully I’ll get to visit them soon! Lisa x

Yes, get down there, I’m sure you’d love it! I’ve been going for a couple of years now and the standard hasn’t dropped which is refreshing. Often I find new concepts are great st first but then the service wanes as they get more popular.
